Olympics Day Guide: Feb. 12

The U.S. was both a victim and a beneficiary of Tuesday's Day of Upsets. On the down side, favorites Kikkan Randall and Shaun White of cross country and snowboarding, respectively, fell short of not just the gold, but of the medal stand completely. White had to settle for fourth place and promptly picked up his snowboard and stormed home, announcing a break from snowboarding to tour with his band. Randall was bested by a field that included teammate Sophie Caldwell and was prevented from even making the finals of the sprint competition (Caldwell finished sixth).

But on the flip side, you have Erin Hamlin. By taking bronze behind the German juggernaut of Natalie Geisenberger and Tatjana Huefner, Hamlin became the first American to ever medal in the luge. And to think she wasn't even the most well-known luger on her team.

Also for the U.S., Devin Logan overcame a pretty horrible knee injury to take silver in the women's freestyle skiing slopestyle.

Interesting Reads
Tuesday was a historic day for the Olympics, when women's ski jumping made its extremely overdue appearance in the Games. Deadspin has a thorough and fascinating take on the sexist history behind the event, and while Sarah Hendrickson of the U.S. didn't take home a medal, she still made history.

Shaun White, the redheaded mop-topped teenager the U.S. fell in love with eight years ago, has worn out his welcome in snowboarding circles and his Olympic career may have ended inauspiciously.
